KW Institute for Contemporary Art is pleased to announce its program for 2022, which includes investigative exhibitions by Peter Friedl, Rabih Mroué and Michel majerus, new orders, projects and exhibitions of Tobias Spichtig, BLESS, Oraib Toukan, Lydia Ourahmane, Christopher Kulendran Thomas, Rachel Rossin and Atiéna R. Kilfa as good as 12th Berlin Biennale organized by the artist Kader Attia.

KW invited artist Tobias Spichtig (born 1982, Switzerland) as part of Pause Series to present his installation Die Matratzen. As the name suggests, the exhibition consists of various used mattresses and different sizes arranged all over the floor of KW’s main hall. They are covered with used sheets from the personal networks of the artist as well as the curator, functioning both as a support mechanism and as a catalyst for stories. 1964-2022 Report is the most in-depth institutional investigation by Peter Friedl (b.1960) in Germany to date. Rabih Mroué (born 1967, Lebanon) is the 2020 recipient of the Schering Stiftung Prize for artistic research. The acclaimed work of Mroué which covers theater, visual arts and literature. Working at the intersection of personal and political history, media criticism and concepts of fatherhood, his work is an interrogation of our ways of seeing and speaking. Kader Attia (born 1970, FR) looks back on more than two decades of decolonial commitment. As an artist, thinker and activist, he was particularly interested in the notion of reparation – first of objects and physical injuries, then of individual and societal trauma. Throughout its practice, reparation has emerged as a mode of cultural resistance, a form of agency that finds expression in various practices and fields of knowledge. In her role as curator of the 12th Berlin Biennale of Contemporary Art, Attia makes this form of agency the starting point of a program that involves contributors and the public in a critical conversation, in order to jointly find ways to take care of the present. Rachel Rossin’s most recent work (born 1987, USA), commissioned in collaboration with a partner institution of KW, will use new technologies that the artist herself created. They are the result of his research on the embodiment in virtual reality, neural networks and DNA as code. With exhibitions in Berlin and New York, the piece will consist of a multiplatform installation that seeks to bring together the physical and digital realm.

In the fall of 2022, Lydia Ourahmane (born in 1992, Algeria) will create a permanent in situ installation at the KW Institute for Contemporary Art. This new commission is part of the continuity of the artist’s continuous engagement with the emotional, psychological and political correlations between material, body and place. Composed of sculpture and performance, the work engages its relationship to its own mortality, to the ritual act and to the notion of permanence, situated in its interest for remains and relics. The KW Institute for Contemporary Art is pleased to participate in a major tribute to artist Michel Majerus (born 1967-December 2002, Luxembourg) with a multi-faceted program throughout the city of Berlin as well as in Germany which demonstrates the influence of the late artist on his peers as well as the following generations. Twenty years after his sudden death, the tribute commemorates Majerus by showing both his thoughts on painting as a medium as well as his revolutionary vision. One of a world in which popular culture, advertising and the virtual realms of television, video games and computers have infiltrated the very essence of everyday life, a process that is only intensified by digital developments. Over the past decade, Anglo-Tamil artist Christopher Kulendran Thomas (b.1979, UK) has explored how contemporary art produces realities and negotiates the social and cultural interweaving between ‘East and West. He has been particularly invested in examining the relationships between technology, imperialism, citizenship and political economy, seen through the prism of the cultural scene of his native homeland, Tamil Eelam, a scene that almost died out when the de facto Tamil state of present-day northern and eastern Sri Lanka was wiped out in 2009. The exhibition at KW is the first institutional personal exhibition of Atiéna R. Kilfa (born in 1990, France). Using installations, sculptures, photographs and film, Kilfa reflects on the role of artists in the production of contemporary subjectivity at a time when available models are rapidly collapsing. At her KW exhibition, Kilfa will present a set of newly commissioned works centered on the notion of ‘model’, a term not only used to describe mannequins and models, but also for standardized fictional and social roles. BPA // Trade fair 2022

KW and BPA // Berlin Artist Program founded their partnership in 2020. BPA // is a mentoring program that promotes exchanges between emerging and established Berlin artists. Founded in 2016 by Angela Bulloch, Simon Denny and Willem de Rooij, BPA // organizes workshop visits, public lectures and group exhibitions. KW serves as the venue for the BPA // exposure, an annual exhibition of the work carried out during the current BPA // program.
