Latest from Queen’s Jubilee: Sussexes post photo of daughter Lilibet after arriving in US

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have posted a photo of their daughter Lilibet after celebrating her first birthday.

The picture of Lilibet, who celebrated the occasion with family and close Sussex friends at Frogmore Cottage in Windsor on Saturday, is believed to have been taken by family friend Misan Harriman.

Harry and Meghan’s second child, born June 4, 2021 at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital in California, was named after Queen Elizabeth II.

The couple were “incredibly touched” by the birthday wishes that poured in for Lilibet.

More than $100,000 (£79,800) in donations to the World Central Kitchen have been made in her honor by people around the world, for which the Duke and Duchess also expressed their gratitude.

It follows reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have returned to the United States after a short trip to the UK for Jubilee celebrations.

The early departure means the Sussexes missed the final of the festivities, which saw the Queen make a surprise appearance on the balcony of Buckingham Palace after the royal flag was hoisted above the residence during the pageant.

“Media coverage of the Platinum Jubilee makes me feel uncomfortable working in this industry”

“As a black woman of enslaved African descent, whose tastes were branded with hot irons bearing the initials of members of the royal family, the last four days of wall-to-wall and uncritical responses to the jubilee have been a gaslight experience,” writes race correspondent Nadine White.

How Buckingham Palace’s Balcony Became Key to the Royal Family’s Existence

Crowds outside Buckingham Palace roared with cheers on Sunday evening as the Queen stepped out onto the balcony of the royal residence.

Marking the conclusion of the long weekend, the Queen stood between Prince Charles, Prince William and Prince George, who are first, second and third to the throne respectively.

As Professor Pauline MacLaren of the Center for the Study of Modern Monarchy at the University of London has noted, an appearance on the royal balcony is “the most visible monarchy”.

“But it’s also them at their most strategic. Time and time again over the years they’ve used their appearances there – with considerable insight, it must be said – to underscore and maintain their place at the heart of the nation. MacLaren said.

We took a closer look at the key role Buckingham Palace’s balcony played throughout the Queen’s reign. Colin Drurry reports:
