The wedding bells are getting louder for Gabourey Sidibe.

Going through: Essence

Actress and director Gabourey Sidibe covered the Brides digital style issue with her fiancé Brandon Frankel, opening up about plans for their nuptials, which they say will take place in the spring of 2023.

The couple, who got engaged in October 2020 after meeting on the dating app Raya, initially wanted to keep things so low-key that they considered not getting married at all.

“The whole time we were engaged, I always said, ‘No, we shouldn’t have a wedding,'” Sidibe said in the cover story. “Maybe we’ll have a barbecue, we’ll get married in the bathroom, and then we’ll go out and tell everyone we’re married.”

After changing her mind, she knows she wants to throw a unique and upbeat event to celebrate their love.

“It can’t be a traditional wedding. Really, it’s not possible,” she said. “I don’t want anything done in a ‘traditional’ way. Our relationship is on our terms and I want it to be fun, like a real party.

And in keeping with the anything-but-traditional theme, the bride-to-be is shunned a white dress for bold colors and prints, the usual curls and buns for twists or Senegalese cornrows.

“Honestly, everything I wear on the wedding day will probably be an African print. There may be a little white so it looks like a wedding dress, but it’s definitely going to be colorful,” he said. she declared.

And nothing adds color to a celebration like culture. The actress plans to integrate her Senegalese roots with Frankel’s Jewish background, likely through a specialty menu.

“Including my culture [in the wedding] is important to me for sure. I gave him Senegalese food for the past few years, especially during the pandemic,” she said. “It will be a nice mix of African and Jewish touches. I absolutely want his experience to be there because it’s a partnership.

Either way, this opportunity to feel married a year earlier was something she cherished.

“It was much more fun than I expected! She’s a beloved bride, cover girl and wife. I’m lucky,” Sidibe wrote on Instagram. “Thank you @brides for hosting me and my fiancé, my partner, my love @brandontour who looks so beautiful in her costumes!!!!! We are enjoying the rehearsal for our actual wedding!”
