City Life Org – Shantell Martin x Fotografiska New York x Gallery Gurls
Last night, New York Photography hosted an evening of live musical performances by Shantell Martin and a fireside chat with the founder and editor of gurls gallery, Jasmine Hernandez. After the conference, Martin signed copies of his first published monographic book ‘Lines’ with HENI, and Hernandez signed copies of his book “Here We Are: Color Visionaries Transforming the Art World”which are now available for purchase at the Fotografiska New York bookstore.
Groundbreaking multimedia artist Shantell Martin is known for her iconic black and white drawings exploring themes such as intersectionality, identity and play. Martin began creating music privately over a decade ago . Her music follows the same spontaneous, intuitive flow she masters with her bold lines. Her sound practice embodies a conversation that sits at the intersection of music and movement, wordplay and storytelling, social commentary and willful ignorance of the medium’s traditional modalities. He lives the moment of discovery and abandonment, of curiosity, and leads the public into a landscape of sonic freedom.
Shantell Martin: “Super excited for this performance, it’s been a long time since I’ve done a live show in NYC, especially like this. I’m thrilled to be collaborating with Jasmin and look forward to our conversation. It’s always a feeling great to bring friends and family together in one room,”
Jasmine Hernandez: “I am delighted to host a fireside chat with Shantell Martin to discuss her incredible and prolific career as an artist and her moving new installation at the museum. I have been emotionally connected to Martin’s work for almost a decade now, and it is a privilege to unveil his rich and expansive artistry.
Wendi Weinman, Programming Director at Fotografiska New York: “It is a great honor for the museum to present Shantell on the MainStage to our community. The 6th floor loft allows artists to showcase themselves through music, film, dance and more.”
