Portrait photography is one of the most popular genres, and it comes with its own set of challenges and pitfalls. If you’re new to portraiture and want to improve your work, check out this fantastic video tutorial which details some common mistakes beginners make and what you can do to fix them or avoid them altogether in the first place.

Come to you from photo genius, this excellent video tutorial covers some common mistakes made by beginners in portrait photography and explains how to correct them. One of the most common I see that’s easy to miss in the moment is not checking the background. It’s understandable, as your attention is mostly on the subject and ensures you have a great pose and expression and a sharp shot, but make sure you only take a second to scan the whole frame. Often you’ll see a distraction behind the subject that you didn’t notice before that would have made your life a lot harder in post, or you might find your composition is a bit lacking and might need some tweaking. Watch the video above for the full recap.
